Christian music news: Rebecca St. James sets ‘mother/daughter’ evening

Latest christian music:

The “SHE” event, highlighted by Grammy winning Christian singer and best-selling author Rebecca St. James, is coming to central Arkansas on Monday, Sept. 14.

St. James and the event are scheduled to appear at First Baptist Church in Cabot at 7 p.m.

The church is located at 204 N Third Street. Tickets are available both at the church by calling 501-843-5472 and at the Mardel Christian bookstore in Sherwood. Tickets are scaled at $15 general admission or $19 for gold circle seating. They are also available by calling 1-800-965-9324 or visiting online at: www.iTickets.com

“It’s a remarkable evening that draws not only an audience filled with the equally engaged cross-generational teaming of mothers and their teen daughters, but even more remarkably it’s packed with the happily responsive faces of ‘cool girl friends’ from literally 8 to 80,” said spokesman Jackie Monaghan of Nashville, Tenn. Exploring the areas of being a “safe, healthy, empowered woman of God” at any age — thus the acronym “SHE” — is an experience that has regularly drawn a schedule of full audiences to churches and auditoriums across the country, she said.

Filled with music and “girl talk,” the event unfolds like a conversation with an old friend over a shared cup of tea — or as a Starbucks latte while twittering and rockin’ out to your iPod depending on the age group.

Australian born Rebecca, who has sold millions of units of her music internationally, offers a special emphasis on communication between teen girls and their mothers — a message found in the pages of St. James’ books and close to her heart as a communicator.

The conference is built on the concept of celebrating the beauty of becoming a total ‘SHE’ woman — safe, healthy and empowered — in every season of life. The conference series was inspired by St. James’ best selling books SHE and SHE TEEN (Tyndale) which have been an inspiration to teens and adult women to find their foundation for life in God’s plan for living.

A testimony to St. James’ credibility as a respected “voice” with today’s young women is seen in her recent book, PURE (Faithwords/Hatchette) being nationally honored this year with nomination as a finalist in the Youth/Young Adult category for “Best Book of 2009” accolades from the prestigious Christian Retailers Association in their annual Reader’s Choice Awards. Fall 2009 will find the release of another potential best-seller as her newest book LOVED reaches bookstores next month.

Adding to the perfect balance of Rebecca’s connection with the audience from her life experiences as a vital young single woman, is her ideal counter-balance. Joining her on the conference stage is her real-life mentor, Evie Tornquist, herself an award-winning Christian singer whose career throughout the 1970’s and ’80’s inspired millions of record sales and an enduring international following. Now married with two grown children, Evie has been both an inspiration and close personal friend and role model to the younger St. James who herself is no stranger to the term ‘role model,’ Monaghan said.

“An outspoken voice for her generation, Rebecca has taken her stand for purity onto concerts stages all over the world. Her best-selling single “Wait for Me” inspired both a best-selling book and a message that she has used to passionately inspire an entire generation of young people.

Whether through the rock influenced music of Rebecca, the softer sounds of Evie, or the mutual straight talk from the heart that is the core center of the evening. “Both women set their music and their life experiences before their audience, welcoming their questions, offering real answers, sharing God’s grace, His love, and His passion to reach women with the message of how to live life based on practical biblical principals in a rubber-meets-the-road 21st century,” Monaghan said.

“We talk about the things women care about from finding their purpose and security in God, to mentoring, to communicating more effectively with each other — whether teen to parent, or friend to friend,” St. James said in a news release.

Tornquist said: “It’s not unusual for Bec and me to see teens and pre-teens coming with their moms, or more mature ladies coming in groups. We have the welcome mat out to all ‘the girls’ to come sit with us at the feet of Jesus as we celebrate the real beauty of womanhood that the world too often tries to take away.”

As witnessed from the packed audiences on previous scheduling of SHE events, this year’s fall conference series will provide a much anticipated opportunity for women to celebrate the chance to connect with God and each other.

There’s a gift to be found here for every girl in attendance — young and adult. Whether they come for the music, to take notes, or just to take heart, SHE is truly a “special event.”

Christian music news: Rebecca St. James to star in upcoming movie, 'Sarah's Choice'

Latest christian music:

Rebecca St. James - gospel artist

When most people hear the name Rebecca St. James, they think of a GRAMMY and Dove-award winning Christian pop singer from Australia - a talented young woman who is passionate about her faith and her music. Many people know that besides performing gospel music, St. James is also an author, and quite a few are aware that in 2000, she had a cameo appearance in the film Left Behind: The Movie. So, it should come as no surprise to discover Rebecca St. James is branching out again by starring in her first feature film, Sarah's Choice, releasing in November 2009.

Rebecca St. James - Sarah's Choice

In Sarah's Choice, Rebecca St. James plays a successful, young, single, career woman who learns unexpectedly that she is pregnant outside of marriage. Well on her way to making her dreams a reality, "Sarah's Choice" examines the realities of life and the life-altering decisions faced by millions of unwed young women each year as they make choices that lead to unexpected pregnancies and then face the consequences.

Rebecca St. James - statement

In a statement on crossrhythms, Rebecca St. James recently said, "We live in a very real world where scores of young women every day are being impacted by the heart-wrenching issues and life changing choices that my character is suddenly forced to come face to face with. I feel it's an important film with a Godly message that I am praying will profoundly touch lives."

Rebecca St. James - abstinence

Rebecca St. James is known as an advocate for teen sexual abstinence. Her hit single "Wait for Me" from her Transform album reflects her views on abstinence. To promote the song, in 2002, Rebecca released the book Wait For Me: Rediscovering the Joy of Purity in Romance which sold over 100,000 copies. Starring as an unwed mother in Sarah's Choice should be an interesting turn for Rebecca St. James and her fans.

IN THE WAKE OF NOTRE DAME: PRO LIFE FINDS A PASSIONATE VOICE IN GRAMMY WINNING CHRISTIAN SINGER-ACTRESS REBECCA ST. JAMES

(Nashville, Tennessee) –May 18, 2009 – Grammy Award winning Christian singer Rebecca St. James’ voice is among those being raised loudly this week on the side of life.

With the abortion issue on a high note of debate and national consciousness in the wake of President Obama’s controversial appearance over the weekend at Notre Dame’s commencement ceremonies, St. James feels that America cannot be silent on the crucial decision to choose life.

“Considering what happened yesterday at Notre Dame and the fact that 51% of Americans now claim to be pro life, it may be an uphill battle for this administration to continue a pro choice agenda,” she noted in Los Angeles. “Mother Teresa, who I greatly admire, said it well—abortion is ‘the greatest destroyer of peace’—she called it ‘war against the child.’”

Long a passionate and outspoken advocate of abstinence from the global platform of millions of unit sales on her music and a chain of best-selling books, (her self-penned hit song, Wait For Me, has been an anthem for abstinence and birthed a franchise of books worldwide) Australian born St. James has now turned her creative focus to films. Not just any films--films with messages she hopes will positively impact lives.

Her starring role releasing this fall is a film called “Sarah’s Choice,” in which she portrays a young, single career woman facing an unplanned pregnancy. For her, it was more than a movie role that required both intense research and emotions. It was a first-hand encounter through her visits to crisis pregnancy centers and one-on-one interviews with lives that had been too often emotionally shattered by the aftermath of abortion.

“In studying of my role, I met with a number of young women who had actually had abortions. In literally every case, they had no idea of the immense trauma they would encounter after exercising their right of ‘choice'," she noted.

“Considering the pro choice climate America’s current leadership is attempting to foster, I am even more passionate about the need for this film. I want to help prevent life from being stolen from both children and their mothers, and hopefully bring a healing message to those that continue to grieve their loss.”

REBECCA ST. JAMES HONORED WITH 2009 'ARVELLA SCHULLER AWARD' FOR PROMOTING POSITIVE CHRISTIAN VALUES IN THE ARTS

PHOTO ID: REBECCA ST. JAMES WITH ACCLAIMED HOLLYWOOD FILM COMPOSER, MARK McKENZIE—SHARE 2009 ARVELLA SCHULLER AWARD.

(Nashville, Tennessee) – March 18, 2009 – Grammy Award winning Christian recording artist, Rebecca St. James was this weekend named the recipient of the 2009 Arvella Schuller Award at ceremonies at the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California. The presentation was made by Dr. Robert Schuller.

The award recognizes artistic excellence in the promotion of Christian values through music, film, and the mass mediums of the arts and entertainment.

Of the presentation, Rebecca noted: "I'm very humbled. It's affirming both of the personal dedication I feel to honor God in all I do creatively, and my belief that His presence in the creative arts should be upheld at the highest levels."

Since launching her career in music as an EMI artist in the 90’s, while still in her early teens, Australian born St. James has been a major influencer on an entire generation of contemporary Christian music. Both a Grammy and multi-Dove Award winning artist, her impact with both music and message has been global in scope. Her strong personal message on the abstinence agenda has reached over to mainstream media nationally, catching attention from print, to major television, to the portals of the White House under the administration of George W.Bush.

Becoming a best selling author several years ago with her celebrated book, Wait For Me (Thomas Nelson), now exceeding sales of 100,000, Rebecca has since authored more than a half dozen major books. Her latest book, Pure (FaithWords) made its’ initial appearance in the Top 10 on the CBA bestseller list in February.

Rebecca has recently turned her creative interests to film. She last month wrapped filming of the forthcoming movie production, Sarah’s Choice, her first leading role, expected to be released this fall.

Joining Rebecca St. James as the recipient this year of the Schuller Award honor is acclaimed Hollywood film composer, Mark McKenzie, whose credits include musical composition and scoring for numerous award winning films, including Academy Award winning Dances With Wolves, The Patriot, Sleepless in Seattle, Spiderman I & II, Men In Black, Batman Returns and Goodwill Hunting.

"SHE" CONFERENCE EVENT: GRAMMY WINNING SINGER CONNECTS TEENS, MOMS AND GIRLS OF ALL AGES!

(Nashville, Tennessee) –March 3, 2009 – Finally—something mothers and their teenage daughters can agree on! By the droves nationally, they’re finding this new found sense of unity on ‘what’s cool’ at a unique one night Christian music/ministry conference event called simply—what else—SHE!

It’s a unique evening with Grammy Award winning Christian singer and best selling author Rebecca St. James as the centerpiece.

The SHE event was first creatively birthed from St. James' remarkable connectivity with teens through her music and books. Her ensuing vision was one of how teen girls and mothers could be brought together under one tent for a fun and meaningful dose of cross generational “music and girl talk.” This is the unique face of SHE—an audience filled with girls of all ages. Look around the crowd and you'll see teens and pre-teens, mothers, daughters, granddaughters and friends.

The SHE conference unfolds like a warm conversation with an old friend over a shared cup of tea. Or, to put it in the vernacular of the younger set in the crowd—like a Starbucks while you’re tweeting your friends, checking your Facebook and simultaneously rockin’ out with your iPod!

Australian born Rebecca St. James is definitely a young woman with the true heart of a communicator. A passionate advocate of the abstinence message since breaking wide on the American music scene as a teenager in the ‘90’s, she has since sold millions of units of her music globally. At the same time, St. James has succeeded in touching and encouraging an entire generation of young women with her dedication to Christianity and the consistent faith and values message she’s offered in best selling books such as SHE and SHE TEEN—the books upon which this event was initially built.

Most recent on Rebecca’s list of accomplishments is the current Top 10 status of her latest book, Pure, on the Christian bookseller’s ‘young adult’ best seller chart. She has also just wrapped her first starring role on film in the forthcoming movie, Sarah’s Choice, which will reach audiences this fall. In it, Rebecca’s portrays a single young career woman faced with the news that she is pregnant. It’s a role close to her heart. “We live in a very real world where scores of young women every day are faced with the heart wrenching issues my character faces. I feel it’s an important film with a Godly message that I am praying will profoundly touch lives,” notes St. James.

For her SHE event dates this spring Rebecca is armed with a secret weapon. Joining her on the conference is her real life mentor, Evie Tornquist, herself an award winning singer whose career in Christian music throughout the 70’s and 80’s inspired millions of record sales and an enduring international following. Now married with two grown children, Evie joins the younger St. James in bringing cross-generational wisdom, life experiences, good fun, and familiar music to the evening.

“Evie and I talk about the things teens and women of all ages care about—finding their purpose and security in God, mentoring, issues of the real meaning of beauty, straight talk about just saying 'no' to sex before marriage, communicating more effectively with each other-whether teen to parent, or friend to friend,” notes St. James.

Whether through Rebecca’s contemporary Christian influenced music, the softer sounds of Evie, or the mutual straight talk on real issues that provides the core of the evening, both women set their hearts before the audience –welcoming their questions, offering real answers, sharing God’s grace and His heart to reach girls and women of all ages in the ‘rubber meets the road' 21st century with a simple message: That they are loved.

“It’s not unusual for Bec and me to see teens and pre-teens coming to the event with their moms, friends coming with friends, or even for us to see more mature ladies coming in groups. We have the welcome mat out to all ‘the girls’ to come to celebrate with us the real beauty of womanhood that the world too often tries to take away,” notes Evie.

With the upcoming series of concerts, attendees will also be treated to an introduction to new contemporary music duo--Joel & Luke --a handsome set of Australian brothers who happen to be the younger siblings of St. James. Gifted singers and songwriters. the twosome is on the verge of launching nationally with their own major recording deal.

As witnessed by the packed audiences that greeted SHE events last year, the spring ‘09 conferences will provide a much anticipated opportunity for women to celebrate a night to connect with God, the music and ministry of Rebecca and Evie, their common interests, and each other.

There’s a gift to be found in the evening for every ‘girl’ in attendance—young and young at heart alike. Whether they come for the music, to take notes, or just to take heart, SHE is truly a ‘special event.’

A NEW YEAR’S MESSAGE FROM REBECCA ST. JAMES: A New Season

(Nashville, Tennessee)--December 31, 2008 --Grammy Award winning Christian singer, Rebecca St. James, closes 2008 with a successful new book added to her list of impressive credits. The book, "Pure" is a relevant and timely slice of day-to-day encouragement on living a radical lifestyle of purity in mind, body, and spirit--a topic that since the book's Fall release has shown tremendous connectivity with readers and reviewers alike -- at a time perhaps when 'encouraging words' seem too often at a premium.

The Australian born St. James, whose popularity goes global as do her tours, is vocal that she feels God's presence in America is vitally important for the New Year.

She offers the following personal words from the pages of "Pure:"

"Often we think of 'new things' on January 1, but God is about the business of newness far more frequently than that. God is a God of new things.

“Forget about what’s happened; don’t keep going over old history. Be alert, be present. I’m about to do something brand-new. It’s bursting out! Don’t you see it? There it is! I’m making a road through the desert, rivers in the badlands.”
—Isaiah 43:18, 19, The Message

A few years ago I learned the hard way that it’s very important for people in ministry to take “time out” and be still. Recently I took an extended sabbatical and really focused on praying and seeking God on what this time should look like. My life is pretty mapped out—with touring, book writing, songwriting, and time spent in the studio. Sabbatical is a time of open space to approach God with open hands and heart and to say, “God, renew me, speak to me, prepare my heart for new things that you want to do in my heart and in my ministry.” I really have a sense of anticipation that God is moving me into a new “room” of my life—that I have actually been in one room for some time—and He is moving me into another space in the house of my life.

I’m very excited about this coming season—that God is already opening some new doors of ministry. I’m also in this season exploring some film and acting opportunities that I have been wanting to explore for some time. It just feels to me like a season of newness and I think this sabbatical is very key to that. Ultimately, I always want to be in the center of God’s will and involved in the adventure He has for me. One has to sit and hear from God—and be still—to be sensitive to His will for what’s His best for us as He writes the story of our lives.

There are many good songs already in existence. Why is God so concerned with new ones? Because they arise out of new experiences, new ways in which God has recently revealed himself in our lives. He’s not just the God who did some amazing things in our past—He’s the God who is doing some amazing things now! And since He is the Creator He knows how to invent newness in the lives of His children. He simply wants us to come to Him and ask for new times of refreshing.

If you feel as if you are in a spiritual rut, ask yourself why. Have you allowed yourself to settle into a state of apathy or mediocrity, because the same old songs drone on in your life? All you have to do is ask, “God, what new thing do you want to bring in my life this season?” If you are willing to ask, He is willing to answer. What are you waiting for? Do it today.

A blessed New Year to you, my friends!"

Rebecca St. James
