The “SHE” event, highlighted by Grammy winning Christian singer and best-selling author Rebecca St. James, is coming to central Arkansas on Monday, Sept. 14.

St. James and the event are scheduled to appear at First Baptist Church in Cabot at 7 p.m.

“It’s a remarkable evening that draws not only an audience filled with the equally engaged cross-generational teaming of mothers and their teen daughters, but even more remarkably it’s packed with the happily responsive faces of ‘cool girl friends’ from literally 8 to 80,” said spokesman Jackie Monaghan of Nashville, Tenn. Exploring the areas of being a “safe, healthy, empowered woman of God” at any age — thus the acronym “SHE” — is an experience that has regularly drawn a schedule of full audiences to churches and auditoriums across the country, she said.

Filled with music and “girl talk,” the event unfolds like a conversation with an old friend over a shared cup of tea — or as a Starbucks latte while twittering and rockin’ out to your iPod depending on the age group.

Australian born Rebecca, who has sold millions of units of her music internationally, offers a special emphasis on communication between teen girls and their mothers — a message found in the pages of St. James’ books and close to her heart as a communicator.

The conference is built on the concept of celebrating the beauty of becoming a total ‘SHE’ woman — safe, healthy and empowered — in every season of life. The conference series was inspired by St. James’ best selling books SHE and SHE TEEN (Tyndale) which have been an inspiration to teens and adult women to find their foundation for life in God’s plan for living.

With the abortion issue on a high note of debate and national consciousness in the wake of President Obama’s controversial appearance over the weekend at Notre Dame’s commencement ceremonies, St. James feels that America cannot be silent on the crucial decision to choose life.

“Considering what happened yesterday at Notre Dame and the fact that 51% of Americans now claim to be pro life, it may be an uphill battle for this administration to continue a pro choice agenda,” she noted in Los Angeles. “Mother Teresa, who I greatly admire, said it well—abortion is ‘the greatest destroyer of peace’—she called it ‘war against the child.’”

Long a passionate and outspoken advocate of abstinence from the global platform of millions of unit sales on her music and a chain of best-selling books, (her self-penned hit song, Wait For Me, has been an anthem for abstinence and birthed a franchise of books worldwide) Australian born St. James has now turned her creative focus to films. Not just any films--films with messages she hopes will positively impact lives.

Her starring role releasing this fall is a film called “Sarah’s Choice,” in which she portrays a young, single career woman facing an unplanned pregnancy. For her, it was more than a movie role that required both intense research and emotions. It was a first-hand encounter through her visits to crisis pregnancy centers and one-on-one interviews with lives that had been too often emotionally shattered by the aftermath of abortion.

“In studying of my role, I met with a number of young women who had actually had abortions. In literally every case, they had no idea of the immense trauma they would encounter after exercising their right of ‘choice'," she noted.

“Considering the pro choice climate America’s current leadership is attempting to foster, I am even more passionate about the need for this film. I want to help prevent life from being stolen from both children and their mothers, and hopefully bring a healing message to those that continue to grieve their loss.”

A few years ago I learned the hard way that it’s very important for people in ministry to take “time out” and be still. Recently I took an extended sabbatical and really focused on praying and seeking God on what this time should look like. My life is pretty mapped out—with touring, book writing, songwriting, and time spent in the studio. Sabbatical is a time of open space to approach God with open hands and heart and to say, “God, renew me, speak to me, prepare my heart for new things that you want to do in my heart and in my ministry.” I really have a sense of anticipation that God is moving me into a new “room” of my life—that I have actually been in one room for some time—and He is moving me into another space in the house of my life.

I’m very excited about this coming season—that God is already opening some new doors of ministry. I’m also in this season exploring some film and acting opportunities that I have been wanting to explore for some time. It just feels to me like a season of newness and I think this sabbatical is very key to that. Ultimately, I always want to be in the center of God’s will and involved in the adventure He has for me. One has to sit and hear from God—and be still—to be sensitive to His will for what’s His best for us as He writes the story of our lives.

There are many good songs already in existence. Why is God so concerned with new ones? Because they arise out of new experiences, new ways in which God has recently revealed himself in our lives. He’s not just the God who did some amazing things in our past—He’s the God who is doing some amazing things now! And since He is the Creator He knows how to invent newness in the lives of His children. He simply wants us to come to Him and ask for new times of refreshing.

If you feel as if you are in a spiritual rut, ask yourself why. Have you allowed yourself to settle into a state of apathy or mediocrity, because the same old songs drone on in your life? All you have to do is ask, “God, what new thing do you want to bring in my life this season?” If you are willing to ask, He is willing to answer. What are you waiting for? Do it today.

Day One
In Tune with God's Purpose

God's love is meteoric, his loyalty astronomic, his purpose titanic, his verdicts oceanic. Yet in his largeness nothing gets lost; not a man, not a mouse, slips through the cracks. —Psalm 36:5–6, The Message

Reflection

When I was twelve years old, I attended a program at my school that significantly impacted my life's story. A speaker asked people to come forward if they felt God leading them to give their gifts and talents to Him. I felt led by God to respond and ask for His direction in discovering His will and purpose for my life. It was that same year that God began to lead me into music. At age thirteen, I released my first album in Australia. It was a worship album titled Refresh My Heart. I've been asked a number of times, "What do you feel most called to do?" I feel that my God-given purpose is to encourage people to stand for God, to live radically for Him, and to live a life of worship. The roots of this began when I responded to God at age twelve.

This devotional journey is all about seeking purity of mind, body, and spirit. And to seek after purity, we must begin in our minds. One definition for pure, when used in the sense of a musical tone, means "free from harshness or roughness and being in tune."1 God has a purpose for every one of our lives, and He invites us to get in tune with His plan. To be pure is to seek His purpose first and foremost in our lives. If we want our lives to have an impact, that begins and ends with discovering and living out our God-given purpose. Without purpose we have no clear direction, and we may not know which decision to make when we're at a crossroads. Purpose gives us focus to discern what is important. And purpose gives us the strength to do what we need to do. One of this world's greatest tragedies is a life lived without discovering one's God-given purpose. We need to be careful to not just go through the motions without knowing our life purpose. We aren't really living unless we know why we're alive.

Looking Further

Since the beginning of time, God has made everything "on purpose." He created the sky for a reason: to separate the water of the earth from the waters of the heavens (see Gen. 1:6-8). He made the land with a purpose: so there would be dry ground between the seas for us to live on (see Gen. 1:9-12). He designed the sun and the moon with a plan in mind: to mark off seasons, days, and years (see Gen. 1:14-18). And as the crowning glory of creation, He fashioned human beings in His own image (see Gen. 1:26-27). If He thinks highly enough of you and me to put His fingerprint on us, we can be assured that He has a purpose for every one of us. The apostle Paul put it this way:Everything, absolutely everything, above and below, visible and invisible . . . everything got started in him and finds its purpose in him. He was there before any of it came into existence and holds it all together right up to this moment. (Col. 1:16-17, The Message)

Living It Out

Are you in tune with God's purpose for your life? In order for your dreams and His plan to live in harmony together, you have to cooperate. If you are not on the same page with Him, ask God to show you what He has in mind and to give you the courage to follow His plan. He wants to make the journey with you toward finding the purposeful life for which He destined you.

Day Two
Who Determines Your Worth?

What's the price of a pet canary? Some loose change, right? And God cares what happens to it even more than you do. He pays even greater attention to you, down to the last detail—even numbering the hairs on your head! So don't be intimidated by all this bully talk. You're worth more than a million canaries. —Matthew 10:29-31, The Message

Reflection

Several years ago I embarked on a five-week life-changing experience in Switzerland. I needed spiritual, emotional, and physical recuperation, and I found it at L'Abri (which means "shelter"), a community study center where Christians and non-Christians can seek honest answers about God and His purposes for their lives. It was there that the Lord spoke to me of my God-worth to the point that it began replacing my selfworth. Before this experience I don't think I had ever really discovered the sense of wholeness in God that I felt there.

One of the things I had to confront in my life was the issue of perfectionism. When you are a perfectionist, you tend either to push yourself all the time to be better or to go into failure mode and give up, believing that you'll never succeed. My tendency was to live with a sense that God was disappointed in me—that I was not good enough. Through study and prayer and time alone with Him, the Lord assured me that I am loved and secure. I know that I'm His princess, accepted and cherished.

Because many people spend much of their time trying to please others, they're uncomfortable in their own skin and don't know who they are. Unfortunately, they derive their sense of worth from what they do or don't do for others. It's all based on a false and conditional love. We can get so wrapped up in our selfishness that we can't see beyond ourselves to find our worth in God—who we are in Him.

Looking Further

If you've read The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J. R. R. Tolkien, or have seen the movies, you're familiar with the creature Gollum and his obsession with "my precious," the ring. He was willing to do anything to keep it, and went to great lengths in an attempt to reclaim it. Ultimately, his selfish fascination with the treasure cost him his life. Unlike Gollum, God's love for us is purely selfless because He was willing to give up what's most important to Him—His only Son—to redeem you. He cherishes you as His precious creation. The apostle Paul put it this way:

Christ arrives right on time to make this happen. He didn't, and doesn't, wait for us to get ready. He presented himself for this sacrificial death when we were far too weak and rebellious to do anything to get ourselves ready. And even if we hadn't been so weak, we wouldn't have known what to do anyway. We can understand someone dying for a person worth dying for, and we can understand how someone good and noble could inspire us to selfless sacrifice. But God put his love on the line for us by offering his Son in sacrificial death while we were of no use whatever to him. (Rom. 5:6-8, The Message)

Living It Out

How much time do you spend in the morning thinking about how others will perceive you based on what you look like each day? How could you spend some of that time contemplating your worth in God's eyes? Look in the mirror and realize how precious you are to Him.

Sounds like … a sometimes-edgier blend of St. James' modern pop/rock sound, resembling Alanis Morissette, Sarah McLachlan, Evanescence, Plumb, and BarlowGirl.

At a glance … it's been a long five years since her Transform album, yet despite a few derivative tracks, Rebecca St. James proves she hasn't lost her touch, thanks to a newfound rock edge and lyrical openness.

"I have let the cold creep in and lock my ability to feel … I'm running out of time to live/Running out of love to give/Running out of life within/God help me." Whoa, are these lyrics (from "God Help Me") by the same perpetually cheerful and hopeful Rebecca St. James that Christian music fans have come to love since 1994?

Indeed, they come from a young woman who has wrestled with burnout and personal fears since 2000's Transform, which is partly why it's taken five years for her to release an album of new material. She's been plenty busy with relentless touring, participation in !Hero: The Rock Opera, writing a string of books, and releasing the best-selling Worship God. Nevertheless, St. James the songwriter has been absent too long, but fortunately, If I Had One Chance to Tell You Something proves that she hasn't lost her touch.

"God Help Me" starts the album and remains one of the most impressive because it clearly demonstrates her new songwriting approach. Dark, intense, and above all, honest, it's a prayer of vulnerability that stems from brokenness. St. James has gradually come to understand that Christian music doesn't always have to offer the answers—sometimes, it's more effective to simply be relatable, since these feelings are universal to Christians and non-Christians alike. Moreover, it's one of her most rocking songs ever, similar to Evanescence, early Plumb, or Alanis Morissette.

The answer to St. James' wordy album title is "You Are Loved," a catchy tune with a Brit-pop flavor and a terrific sampled-string hook. Written while thinking about a childhood friend who has fallen away from God, it's a simple and sincere letter that shares God's love with any heart that's grown cold. The strong rocker "Beautiful Stranger" is inspired by St. James' work with Compassion International, expanding on the idea of serving Christ through "the least of these." Heavier guitars also elevate "Shadowlands," which draws its title from C. S. Lewis and is a typically good ballad expressing faith through the dark valleys of life....

Sounds like … Rebecca tackles seven of her favorite modern worship songs (and a few originals) with her trademark alternative pop/rock sound.

At a Glance … not a particularly creative worship project, but the album production and Rebecca's vocals make Worship God an enjoyable listen.

The latest album from Rebecca St. James, Worship God, is something of a milestone for her career. For starters, it's her first album title to exceed one word since her 1994 self-titled U.S. debut. One could also consider it a milestone since Rebecca has been making music now for a little more than ten years (she released Refresh My Heart in her native Australia at the age of 13). In that sense, Worship God is Rebecca's way of exploring her musical influences and inspirations, in this case praise and worship music. Seven of the album's twelve tracks are covers of her favorite worship songs over the years, with four original worship songs written for this album. There's also a remix of her 1998 song "Omega," which originally appeared on the worship album Listen Louder a few years ago. If you're familiar with Rebecca's alternative pop/rock style and can imagine her adapting well-known modern worship songs to it, you know exactly what to expect of Worship God. This is both the album's greatest strength and weakness.

On the one hand, Rebecca's so good at what she does, you can't help but like her versions of these songs. Reunited with producer Matt Bronlewee from her Transform album, Rebecca continues with the formula that's worked so well for her since her 1996 God album — ethereal pop, edgy guitars, programmed effects, lush strings, drum loops, and of course Rebecca's beautiful and passionate vocals. These elements all are used effectively on "Let My Words Be Few," which is different enough from Matt Redman's sparsely arranged original for Rebecca to call it her own. Similarly, Rebecca adds her artistic imprint to Jeremy Casella's "More Than a Watchman" and the classic hymn "It Is Well With My Soul," which she appropriately enough recorded on September 11, 2001 in response to the tragedy. I suppose these two tracks stand out because "More Than a Watchman" isn't as well-known a worship song, and the adaptation of an old hymn to a modern pop sound is always interesting since there's more room for artistic interpretation.....

Let's start with the adjectives: energetic, powerful, creative, refreshing, excellent. That pretty much captures the essence of "Transform," the latest and--yes--greatest from Rebecca St. James, who never ceases to amaze. With more songwriting input than ever before, this blessed young Aussie gathers sounds from today's pop world and meshes them together oh-so-well. It would have been easy for RSJ to build on the groove that was established with her previous Grammy-winning release, Pray, but she's never one to sit still. And she playfully reminds us, in the Euro-disco sounding "Reborn," singing, "if you see a change in me and wonder." The riveting rocker "All Around Me" takes a page or two from the Garbage catalog, yet RSJ gives enough mojo to make it her own. The powerfully majestic "Stand" is another tour de force for RSJ, who showcases her mighty vocal talents in this pop masterpiece. Producers Matt Bronlewee and Dan Huff also should be commended for blending a lot of energy into a tightly focused and great-sounding release. --Michael Lyttle

There's a beauty to the rawness of Rebecca St. James. While her contemporaries in the Christian market ply their formulaic-sounding wares, St. James continues to go where few artists, if any, have gone before. On Pray, her fourth album, the young Australian singer meshes Euro-industrial with charismatic Christian for a mind-bending (if not soul-bending) experience. Producer Tedd T. offers the right blend of programming, melodic rock, and St. James's powerful vocals on the opening title track as well as the brilliant "Come Quickly Lord" and "Peace." While the covers of Rich Mullins's "Hold Me Jesus" and Keith Green's "Lord You're Beautiful" provide new treatments to old standards, it is the numbers penned by St. James and Tedd T. that stand out. Don't miss the haunting final number, "Omega," or the mystery track beyond. --Michael Lyttle

and Pray, and you'll wonder if this is even the same artist. Then again, this sure beats Debbie Gibson or Tiffany at 17. Clearly, songs like "Here I Am," "Way Up Here," and "Above All
Things" are driven by the clean, slick production of Christian master-producer Brown Bannister. If nothing else, this album sounds like a young St. James being groomed as the next Amy
Grant. Listen to the chorus to "Way Up Here" and ask yourself whether it doesn't sound like Grant's "I Have Decided." No matter--we all have to start somewhere. --Michael Lyttle

Nope, this isn't the brand new album from Rebecca St James but rather her first effort recorded as an even more fresh faced teenager than on her American debut in 1994! This recorded in 1991 shows a supremely confident RSJ adopting a pop rock sound with plenty of "80s style guitars to produce a contemporary praise album! Covering tunes from a variety of Australian writers, notably Geoff Bullock, this is a curious album for those who have come to love her Nashville material. "The Rock Medley" shows that Rebecca is not afraid to sing strident songs of praise and that even six years ago she was demonstrating that she potentially had the chops to be a solo artist. Just to prove her youthful versatility she also presents the "Soul Melody" with plenty of groove and horns including a version of Chris Falson's "I Walk By Faith"!....

St. James is an open supporter of teenage sexual abstinence, and has become an unofficial spokesperson for True Love Waits. The popular single "Wait For Me", from her album Transform, encourages abstaining from sex outside of marriage. In 2000, it became the title and focus of a 46-city tour. St. James wrote the song herself while on a tour bus. Her third book, titled Wait for Me: Rediscovering the Joy of Purity in Romance, was published in 2002 and further addressed the issue. She also ardently supports the Pro-Life movement.

Later that year, she moved to the United States upon signing with ForeFront Records, and took her stage name at the label's request.

Heaven & Earth: A Tapestry of Worship

One of the most underappreciated releases of 1999, Heaven & Earth features some of the most exciting and creative female talent in the Christian music world. Michelle Tumes's worshipful ballad "For the Glory of Your Name" leads off the release, and could be one of her better recording efforts. Producer John Hartley, who wrote and managed this pleasing project, magically segues Tumes's wistful number into Jennifer Knapp's Celtic-oriented "Whisper My Name." It's a device tastefully used throughout as artists Nichole Nordeman, Margaret Becker, and Rebecca St. James blend one into the other. The seamless threading of Tumes's "My Dwelling Place" into St. James's "River of Life" explains why these singers are so well drawn together. Although stylistically different, each woman approaches the music in a spirit of worship. This is so much more than a collection: it's truly a well-woven celebration of talent. --Michael Lyttle

Transform

The new project from Rebecca St. James starts off with a short and gentle orchestral introduction, and is immediately followed by "For the Love of God," which features an electronic rock loop reminiscent of U2's "Discotechque." Such is an example of the interesting mesh of sounds found on Transform, Rebecca's fourth album with Forefront Records. The merging of beautiful pop with electronica is certainly not anything new for Rebecca, as anyone who has heard her previous album Pray knows. But it's never been done to such spectacular effect as on Transform. The album's title refers to the transforming power of God as described in 2 Corinthians 3:18, but it doesn't seem to be a running theme throughout the album. Still, at least Rebecca's lyrics are as passionate and heartfelt as ever.

The London Sessions Orchestra is a fantastic addition to Rebecca's ethereal rock sound on tracks like "For the Love of God" and "Merciful," as well as the strong and anthemic "Stand," which feels like something Rebecca could have sung at the Olympics. There's some wonderful acoustic guitar work layered over a dance beat on "Wait For Me," a love song written as a plea for purity to her future husband. I like the fact that Rebecca takes chances musically, going for different song styles throughout the album. She has a good vocal range, which she's always demonstrated by doing background vocals on her past albums, but this time she displays it more in her lead vocals with the occasional high note and aggressive growl. Of course a lot of credit needs to be given to primary producer Matt Bronleewe (Jars of Clay, Plumb) for helming such a big production and displaying Rebecca's vocal and songwriting skills so well....

Sounds like … a collection of Rebecca's unique blend of vertically focused modern pop and ethereal rock.

At a Glance … Rebecca has enough great songs from her nine-year career to fill two discs, so while Wait For Me is a decent overview of her best work, some of the inclusions and exclusions are puzzling.

Not that I'm trying to make Rebecca St. James feel old, but a lot has happened in Christian music since her American debut in 1994. Think about it — at that time, no one had heard of Jennifer Knapp or Third Day, Newsboys were only just going public, dc Talk had yet to declare themselves Jesus Freaks, and Jars of Clay was still a year or two away from making waves with "Flood." A then-16-year-old Rebecca had only just come to America with her family, soon signing with Forefront Records on the strength of her Australian recording, Refresh My Heart (recorded in her early teens). Six albums later, after a bevy of radio singles and Dove Award nominations too numerous to count, Rebecca remains one of the most popular and influential Christian artists from the last ten years … and she's still in her mid-20s.

Needless to say a greatest hits anthology is due — perhaps overdue, since Rebecca has had so many Christian radio hits on multiple station formats. With 18 tracks and just shy of 74 minutes of music, Wait for Me: The Best From Rebecca St. James is packed with material ranging from her 1994 self-titled debut to her popular Worship God album in 2002. It's not entirely clear, however, what criteria was used to choose the songs on this compilation — presumably some combination of opinions from Rebecca, Forefront, and the fans who frequent their websites. Whatever the process, many of the songs excluded from the album were more popular hits than what was included....

The Good:
Hard to believe that in more than ten years of recording and touring, Rebecca St. James has never released a concert video until this CD/DVD combo, capturing her 2006 show in Fort Meyers, Florida. The singer/songwriter shines on several of her most acclaimed hits, including the purity centered "Wait For Me," worshipful Hillsong cover "Take All of Me," and the rippling Euro-pop of "Reborn." Songs from her most recent album If I Had One Chance To Tell You Something also translate well to the stage, especially the beautiful ballad "Forgive Me" and the haunting "Beautiful Stranger" (inspired by her work with Compassion International). This project deserves recognition for its cutting edge visual approach, mixing a variety of camera angles, split screen techniques, and music video clips throughout the concert....

Rebecca St. James - Live Worship: Blessed Be Your Name (Forefront)

Sounds like … St. James' familiar modern pop sound in a live worship setting—imagine Darlene Zschech if she rocked out more.

At a glance … Although somewhat brief and released a little too soon after Worship God, St. James' new offering demonstrates a solid live rock sound with effective worship leading.

In many ways, Rebecca St. James is more popular than ever—nearly 2.5 million albums sold, a relentless touring schedule, participation in the highly publicized !Hero rock opera album and tour, numerous media appearances, and enduring popularity among fans, not to mention a new book to be released in fall 2004. All pretty remarkable considering she hasn't released an album of all-new, original material for close to four years.

Which is why I approached this new recording with some skepticism. Despite the success of 2002's Worship God, I wasn't overwhelmed with its predictable pop approach to modern worship. Now two years after that album's release, we have Live Worship: Blessed Be Your Name, which mostly consists of the same songs in a live setting. For that matter, it's marketed as a nine-track EP, not a full-length album. Is it really worth getting excited over a shortened revisit of St. James' last studio project? You might be as surprised as I was.

For starters, though it's only nine songs, Live Worship runs 40 minutes—longer than a number of full lengths, yet still reasonably priced at $9 or less. It comes in response to fans' requests for a live worship album. (I also suggested a live album would be an improvement in my review of Worship God.) Studio worship albums are fine if you present original songs or innovative arrangements; if not, the artist can come off sounding like a cover band. A live worship album, however, benefits from the additional energy of the band and an enthusiastic audience, while also demonstrating the worship leader's ability to, well, lead....
